From what I have seen in my Elementary School library most of the boys a are choosing to read non-fiction books. They love to read about hunting, fishing, and sports. The girls love the fiction series. Even as young as Kindergarten they love to have Junie B. Jones books read to them. The girls that can read on their own love the American girl books and Dork Diaries.
Kristi, that is an often-seen breakdown -- boys going for the informational text, with girls sticking to fiction. I'm hoping the influence on nonfiction with the Common Core will enable teachers to use more text that appeals to boys' "real world" interests. I haven't read the Dork Diaries, so I will have to check those out.
